In recent developments, the Surveyors Registration Board has expanded its mandate to include the registration of Land Agents, commonly known as Real Estate Agents. This move is intended to regulate and control the activities of these professionals to ensure adherence to professional standards. Here’s what industry professionals need to know about this significant change.

Legal Framework

The registration of Land Agents falls under the Surveyors Registration Act CAP 275. According to S.1(1)(h) of the Act, the definition of a surveyor now includes Land Agents. This legal inclusion means that the activities of Real Estate Agents will be subject to the same regulatory oversight as other surveyors.

Registration Process

The registration process for Land Agents is structured into four main routes, each tailored to different professional backgrounds and levels of experience.

1. Professional Associate Route

  • Eligibility: Graduates in Real Estate Management with at least 3 years of work experience.
  • Requirements: Application form, certified academic certificates, passport photo, recommendation letter, proof of professional association membership, CV, logbook of supervised experience, and registration fee.

2. Experience Route

  • Eligibility: Individuals with 15 years of senior-level work experience in government or the private sector.
  • Requirements: Application form, certified academic certificates, passport photo, recommendation letter, proof of professional association membership, employment record, project record, and registration fee.

3. Adaptation Route

  • Eligibility: Professionals with qualifications in other fields and at least 10 years of experience in Real Estate Agency and Management.
  • Requirements: Application form, certified academic certificates, passport photo, recommendation letter, proof of professional association membership, employment record, training evidence, competency evidence, and registration fee.

4. Academic Route

  • Eligibility: Academics with 10 years of experience in teaching Real Estate courses.
  • Requirements: Application form, certified academic certificates, passport photo, recommendation letter, proof of professional association membership, employment record, academic activities record, and registration fee.
